The Circle Sandwich

The Circle Sandwich. It's famous here in this house.

The kids really love it and sometimes we whip one up to entertain and feed guests.
Tonight was Willow's turn to cook dinner and the lucky kid got to make the Circle Sandwich.

I decided to share it because 1) it's easy and uses prepared foods (even if it's not super healthy) 2) it's delicious and makes a great presentation.

We don't eat this often either, which makes it an even better dinner treat!

First you will need some prepared french bread dough. One sandwich takes 2 of these loaves. Due to the rather large-ish size of my family we must make 2 sandwiches, so I buy 4 loaves.

This recipe works best if you have a round pizza stone to bake it on too. Whatever pizza pan you decide to use, give it a little non-stick spray:-)

Place the two loaves of dough together to form a circle and pinch them together at the seam where they connect.

Cut diagonal slits all around the dough. Mix one egg white with a Tb of cold water and spread that mixture all over the top of the dough. This will allow spices to stick and will give the bread a nice shiny and dark color.

I sprinkle some Italian seasons on the top, but you could use sesame seeds or any season you wish.

Now bake in preheated oven at 350 for about 30 minutes.

Allow the bread to cool while you slice and chop up sandwich goodies!

Slice the bread and take the top part off. Go ahead now and pile the sandwich up with your favorite meats, cheeses, veggies, etc. Willow used ham and provolone, lettuce, onion and a sprinkling of Italian dressing.

Now you just have to put the top on and slice it into sandwich sized pieces.

I actually got some Muffaletta dressing at Costco last week and think this would be the perfect base to make a giant, round muffaletta sandwich!

So there you go, the famous Circle Sandwich.

  1. Awesome idea! I think even the boys could handle this one...that is, if they were ever home long enough to fix dinner. Sigh.

  2. That looks delicious! I don't think they make prepared dough over here... I haven't seen pilsbury in a long time. What a great idea though, I wonder if I could make something work with sourdough. :)
